What is a sustainable development project?
The 2005 UK Sustainable Development Strategy says that the goal of  sustainable development is to 'enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life, without compromising the quality of life of future generations'.    Sustainable development involves achieving environmental, social and economic improvement at the same time now and for the long term.

For the Community Webnet, a practical sustainable development project is one that:

  • Seeks to improve quality of life - now and for future generations
  • Is community based, and involves the community in making decisions
  • Improves environmental quality, but also brings wider social or economic benefits.

Sustainable development projects can involve a range of environmental quality issues, about better green spaces, reducing the amount of waste we produce, helping us to use less energy or drive cars less.   They can also be social and economic projects, that give people new skills, improve health, help them to work together or provide better community facilities.  The best examples of local sustainable development projects bring environmental, social and economic benefits to communities.
